Q&A
With Elle Kemp & Martin Gane
THE CHARM OF THE COTSWOLDS: The classic villages in creamy Cotswold stone and glorious countryside on your doorstep wherever you turn. (Elle)
BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF THE CONVERSION: Teaching myself to build a staircase. That was a head-scratcher. And they were winding ones, in tight spaces. (Martin) Working with the listing constraints. (Elle)
HIGH POINT OF THE WORK: The kitchen was in a tight space, too, and it took us a couple of years to decide what we wanted. When we did, we nailed it. We did it well. (Elle)
BEST TIP: Take the time to get to know the space before you make changes. It pays dividends. (Martin)
BEST BARGAIN BUY: Our vintage beadboard (tongue-and-groove with a decorative beading). We paid £200 for a load of reclaimed beadboarding to do the internal walls of the house. It added to the character and we’d rescued it from a bonfire. (Elle)
FAVOURITE SPACE: The snug – it has so much character and all the layering of things that came together by chance, like our pictures and our rugs. (Elle)
