Rugged up

With more Kiwis opting for timber flooring, rugs have become a staple interior item. Simple styles with an artisanal quality and texture, made from natural fibres such as wool or jute, and typically either off-white, undyed or natural in colour are in demand, says Siobhan MacLeod from Flooring Xtra.

Farahnaz Farahani of Rugs Direct also notes a trend for neutral colours such as black, beige and grey. For those wanting a more traditional look, rugs with floral motifs on the border and the body of the rug with a medallion in the centre are popular, along with faded Oriental-style rugs for a vintage look. Rugs are being used both as statement pieces and to define different areas of open-plan living spaces.

In terms of shapes, round rugs have been popular for a few years now, says Zuzana Chovanova from Cronz, as they help to offset straight lines in the room. “They tend to visually increase the size of the space so look great in smaller rooms. We have also seen a big demand for oval-shaped rugs this year too.” Location impacts rug choice, says Zuzana, with North Islanders preferring sleek textures while shaggy rugs are more popular with South Island customers.
