Q&A

With Jane Hopgood

I AM ESPECIALLY PLEASED WITH: My Louis Poulsen pressed aluminium lights in the kitchen. They were so expensive at the time but they’re sort of like a piece of art and I’m really happy I went for those. And we saved elsewhere. You can mix and match a bit, use cheaper lighting elsewhere.

OUR SONS: Have found what they love, too. Sam has an aviation degree and is working as a flight instructor at Nelson Aero Club while his younger brother is in his final year of study at Victoria University of Wellington.

I VERY MUCH MISS: My mum and dad and sisters but we feel so lucky to be in New Zealand, especially now.

LIVING IN NELSON MEANS: I am 800m from work and it’s 10 minutes’ walk into town, to Kevin’s work and to other lovely bars and restaurants. Despite having London at her fingertips, my sister loves coming here to visit, going down to Mama Cod and having a cocktail. I can head out our back gate and within 50m I’m in the Grampions hills, on beautiful walks with the dogs. And the Saturday market? Oh my gosh, it’s brilliant and a great place to buy produce.

BACK IN LONDON: Kevin worked alongside chef Gordon Ramsay at legendary French restaurant Le Gavroche.

NELSON’S COMMUNITY IS: Very artistic and the outdoor life attracts people. At the hospital we find we get really good doctors because people who come here tend to have a better work-life balance. There’s more of a holistic view to work and life.
