New shops and eateries to visit around New Zealand.

Next Door NEWTOWN, WELLINGTON

The neighbour of Newtown eatery Bar Mason, Matt Hawkes, owner of both, and his pal Tom Martin from Martin Brothers were responsible for the fit out with its aesthetic that nods to simpler times “when Formica benchtops were rampant and orange and brown hues ruled the roost.” There are four natural wines on tap, a fancy cocktail list and beers by Parrotdog and Garage Project. A little internal window links the two, so food can be passed from one to the other. 163 Riddiford St, instagram.com/ nextdoornewtown

Special Mention ARATAKI, MT MAUNGANUI

This gorgeous neighbourhood cafe belongs to Lex and Hollie Mawson, the couple behind BBL, a gazebo pop-up that ran for several years. At Special Mention, which was fitted out with the help of local trades including Parkby Projects, Homewerk and Falcon Build, you’ll find Coffee Supreme, a rotating offer of single origin beans from various roasters and a delicious menu. 399 Oceanbeach Rd, instagram.com/specialmention_atk

Crisp Home + Wear HAVELOCK NORTH

The second location for this Auckland store has a clean, calm and – as the name suggests – crisp fit out. Cabinets running almost the length of the store showcase fabulous jewellery, bags, plant-based beauty and home essentials, tableware and stylish reading specs. A carefully curated selection of easy-wear pieces from brands like Dalston, Laing and Elk hangs along the west-facing wall. 3/11 Joll Rd, crisphomeandwear.co.nz Neil TE ATATŪ PENINSULA, AUCKLAND

Auckland creatives Oliver Driver and Ella Mizrahi have opened a “groovy little spot” on the peninsula serving Flight Coffee, Daily Bread pastries and bread, and toast with toppings that nod to Ella’s Middle Eastern heritage. Many of its offerings come from local makers including handmade cups from nearby potters, and there is an array of pantry items and flowers available too. 2/29 Neil Ave, neilcafe.co.nz

The Joneses Ltd KINGSLAND, AUCKLAND

When Brenda Walters left real estate to open a home-staging business, she never dreamed she’d one day end up helping former clients select homeware and furniture for their new pads. The Joneses Ltd is a one-stop retail shop of quality homeware, gifts and furnishings at affordable prices, aimed at taking the stress and legwork out of creating beautiful rooms. You’ll find an eclectic selection from couches to cocktail trolleys, scented soaps to decorative screens, and pottery to plates. 476 New North Rd, instagram.com/ thejonesesltd

The Oatery CUBA ST, TE ARO, WELLINGTON

After trialling her idea for serving up healthy breakfasts on-the-go at markets and from a food caravan, The Oatery’s Anna Campbell spent a year fitting out the toilet block of the former Matterhorn bar to give it a “light, fun and inviting” vibe. On the menu is a range of porridges made with organic oats, oat milk and a variety of toppings as well as granola, bircher muesli and toast. 14 Left Bank, theoatery.nz
