IMBIBE: MALBEC WINE & DRINKS NEWS

MERMAIDMARY continues her love a air with rich and warming malbecs

In my mid 20s I had an Argentinian boyfriend who introduced me to malbec. Our relationship didn’t last but my devotion to the wine varietal has stood the test of time. Originating in France, malbec is one of the five core grapes considered essential components of a Bordeaux blend. Malbec grapes are grown all over the world but its spiritual home is Argentina which produces 75% of the world’s malbec. This thick-skinned grape needs hot temperatures and long sunshine hours to ripen, so has thrived in the Mendoza province of Argentina, famous for its long, hot growing season. New Zealand malbec is grown predominantly in Northland, Auckland and Hawke’s Bay, our warmest grape-growing regions.

The wine itself is dense and robust, much like other Bordeaux varietals cabernet sauvignon and merlot. So deep in colour it appears at times opaque, this full-bodied wine is rich and warming with dark fruit flavours which makes it perfect to enjoy on cold winter nights. While malbec is undoubtedly a “big” wine the palate is softened by its tannins which aren’t as obvious and rugged as say, cabernet sauvignon, which makes it even more approachable. For me, the most appealing thing about malbec is the fruity juiciness that appears on the mid palate.

A malbec opened too early is a missed opportunity as these wines need age. Consider buying some to put away for future enjoyment. It doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavour as good Argentinian examples are excellent value for money.

Be mindful that the alcohol content is commonly over 14%, so consume with care – and with food. Malbec matches wonderfully with winter favourites like roasted red meats and is also great with dark chocolate if you fancy dessert.
