There’s great peace of mind in knowing where your food comes from. But how much red meat should we be eating? We sat down with registered nutritionist Fiona Windle to discuss the importance of lean red meat in the diet.

Why is red meat an important element of a healthy diet?

Red meat is nature’s power pack. Due to its nutrient density, you only need to eat moderate amounts to reap nutritional benefits. It is a source of quality protein, B vitamins, zinc and iron, which all play important roles in supporting immunity, energy levels and growth and development.

How much red meat should we aim to eat? The Ministry of Health’s Eating and

Activity Guidelines advise that adults eat 350-500g cooked lean red meat per week, which is equivalent to about 700g of raw weight. That’s about three moderate (about the size of your palm) serves a week, or including red meat in a meal every second day.

Are there any life stages at which red meat is particularly valuable?

With red meat’s range of essential nutrients, it’s an important food throughout our lives, in particular during times of growth, development and healing. Key nutrients in red meat are important for pregnant and breastfeeding women, babies and toddlers. Teenagers, active people and older adults also need nourishing diets, and red meat contributes quality nutrition during these times.
