EDITOR’S LETTER

Naomi Larkin on this month’s issue.

Despite decades spent ringing in the New Year there are surprisingly few that I remember. A teenage bonfire on Mahia Beach, a crazy night in Sydney’s Kings Cross, several relaxed home-cooked dinners with friends and family both here and overseas and an Auckland K’ Rd rooftop party for the new millennium, complete with a pink bichon frise whose owner had dyed its fur in honour of the event. Now it’s (sadly?) a more sedate affair in terms of celebrations but the prospect of a fresh start still holds its appeal.

It’s always exciting to contemplate possibilities that lie ahead, changes that are needed and to concoct a game plan that, even if it doesn’t come to fruition, is fun to chew over. I am a fan of New Year’s resolutions and enjoy the discussion with others who have considered what they would like to do differently – starting on 1 January. This has been a tough year and I understand Covid has the very real ability to cripple even the best-laid schemes but, as my dad would have said: “Box on.”

On the bright side, Covid has seen the rise and rise of the picnic’s popularity and our food editor Julie Le Clerc’s menu is truly a movable feast. She and photographer Todd Eyre have created a feature that captures the joy of eating alfresco (page 142).

If renovations are on the table for 2022 our Special Feature on bathrooms and laundries will inspire. We’ve focused on several trends and selected products to help you get the look that works for you (page 127). With the warmer weather finally here you’ll also be wanting to get outside at home and enjoy your deck, garden or even your balcony. Check out the shopping ideas on page 24 for the season’s hottest outdoor accessories.

However you plan to farewell 2021 I hope it’s a memorable night spent with whānau and that 2022 goes your way.
