TIMBER FLOOR LOW-DOWN

Information from Flooring Xtra, flooringxtra.co.nz

Thanks to new technologies, you can use timber or get the look of timber without having to fell a forest.

SOLID HARDWOOD FLOORS

are just that – they’re made from solid wood. Each board is made from a single piece of wood. These are normally sanded and finished after installation. Solid floors are often more expensive due to the installation process and the cost of raw materials.

ENGINEERED TIMBER FLOORS

are where a top layer of timber is bonded to a substrate of layered plywood, which makes for a more stable and sustainable product. Engineered timber is normally pre-finished so is quicker and easier to install. These floors aren’t as prone to shrinking or expansion as solid flooring. Think about your room size when choosing timber formats. Long or wide planks can look disproportionate in smaller rooms and narrow boards can be visually busy in a large space.

LAMINATE FLOORING

is made up of multiple layers, fused together. The core of the plank is usually made of compressed wood. On top of this core, a photographic image of wood is applied and overlaid with hyper durable protective layers. Because the product has a wood-based core, check the water resistance of the one you buy to ensure suitability for where you will use it.

LUXURY VINYL TILES/PLANKS

are made up of multiple layers starting with a base of PVC. On top of this a photographic image is placed to replicate timber (or ceramic or stone). A clear wear layer is applied for durability. These products come in a range of thicknesses and qualities. The product is easy to install but may not be as sound absorbent as other flooring types.
