Annabel Berry uses interior colour to enhance mood

Annabel Berry calls herself a passionate colour advocate and runs Oamaru-based Design Federation, working with clients across New Zealand; the business also has a design store.

What do you love about working with colour?

Colour has such a profound influence on any space. Many people do not understand the effect colour can have; that it can alter your mood and well-being. Our intention is for our colour palettes to move people, to inspire them and to have a positive impact on their lives. All of our most successful interior spaces have used Resene colour as a powerful design tool.

Do you have any tips for homeowners when using bolder colour?

Firstly, do not be afraid! Look at spaces in your lives that you love – it might be a restaurant or hotel interior or a piece of clothing – that you respond to in a positive way. Collate images and see what you love the most. Remember it is your home not a showhome; you need to find the colours that suit you and how you want to live your life. Look at the colour wheel – it is a great tool that we use to bring palettes together. Do some colour theory online that will give you more knowledge.

What are your three current favourite Resene colours and why?

Well, I have around 300 favourite Resene colours. We can always find what we are looking for. We have just used these three in our store: Resene Coast which is a deep navy with a green edge; Resene Thatch is my new go-to dusky pink with a brown edge; and Resene Halcyon is a cool light blue that has depth but is not too bright.
