Six Ounces MERIVALE, CHRISTCHURCH

This new coffee shop may be kitted out with rustic, upcycled furniture but the way you order your lunch couldn’t be more modern, with the option to pre-order it via Instagram. The dog-friendly cafe – Brixton the puppy is just one of its attractions – offers coffee by Switch Espresso, sandwiches made with fresh bread by Le Panier Boulangerie and cakes by Full Time Tart. 178 Papanui Rd, sixounces.co.nz

Sophie Divett Jewellery CBD, CHRISTCHURCH

Sophie Divettʼs handcrafted jewellery is beautifully showcased in her new city showroom. With an emphasis on sustainability, Sophieʼs bespoke creations, inspired by Aotearoaʼs nature, are made using recycled metals and ethically sourced gems. The showroomʼs vintage furniture, found by Sophie, reflects her values and helps create a warm and welcoming space to explore her pieces.

Maak Textiles THREE KINGS, AUCKLAND

Fabric is in Christian and Olivia Rysenbry’s DNA; the latest venture for the third-generation textile family (formerly Mokum, then Sparkk) is Maak Textiles, which has a small Auckland showroom designed by Olivia to be “practical, functional and fun”. Maakʼs textiles and wallcoverings are made to order using sustainable production techniques. 59a Hayr Rd, maaktextiles.com

The Next Chapter WĀNAKA, CENTRAL OTAGO

Sure to see many people through the winter is this new independent bookstore, a partnership between locals Jenny Ainge and Sally Battson. Occupying a new bespoke build designed by Condon Scott Architects and with a clever fit out by Campbell Ward from Pinnacle Building, the shop sits next to Cinema Paradiso in a 38sqm street-side space. 72 Brownston St, nextchapterwanaka.co.nz

Kawakawa Eatery BERHAMPORE, WELLINGTON

The brainchild of husbandand-wife team Keri and Paul Retimanu (Ngāpuhi and Samoan respectively), this new eatery, tucked inside a former Italian restaurant, features a fusion Māori, Pasifika and Kiwi menu that includes such delights as palusami (creamed spinach with coconut cream and corned beef) and oka i’a (marinated raw fish). 469 Adelaide Rd, kawakawaeatery.co.nz

Babylon Store ST HELIERS, AUCKLAND

If you’re infatuated with plants and vessels, you’ll find your nirvana in this candy shop of botanical goods – a spin-off venture for landscape designers Babylon Gardens. On offer is an ever-changing selection of Insta-worthy indoor plants and gorgeous pots. If you fall in love with something, ask the team to pot up your personalised combination. 15 Turua St, babylonstore.co.nz
