My money-savers

Karen Barrett, Struan Farm, Piopio

Some interesting choices featured in your money-saving crops (August). My additions to your list:

1. Kings Seeds ‘Top Crop’ dwarf green beans – no supporting structures required, prolific, and easy to harvest.

2. Zucchini/courgettes – blossoms can be stuffed and eaten, fruit can be grilled, steamed, used for zoodles or in baking.

3. Kowiniwini’ Māori potatoes – lovely crushed with butter.

4. ‘Torpedo’ beetroot – delicious roasted with olive oil and maple syrup, also a good shape for pickling.

5. Garlic and shallots – good value, and crispy fried shallots take steamed green beans to another level.

6. Tomatoes – I grow hundreds of seedlings each year to share with our local school and community. Once someone has eaten a beautiful, beefy heirloom tomato from their own garden they’ll never go back to the commercial varieties available in the store! Also, seasonal surplus can be roasted and frozen or made into passata and sauce.
