Invest in your garden
Genie Em, Nelson
In the August issue, editor Jo McCarroll asked if gardening was an expensive hobby or not.
As a pensioner I seek to minimise my costs of gardening. My best investments have been a hand tool for loosening weeds, made by my brother from No.8 wire twisted around itself to make a handle then forward to form two prongs (no rust), and garage sale tools. Also my friend’s pony poo which is $2 a bag. Some people say pony or horse poo creates weeds but I dig the top soil into a wheelbarrow, layer in the pony poo, then replace the topsoil. On top I plant seedlings then sprinkle the top of the soil with untreated sawdust. The three layers create beautiful soil in situ. I also fill my pots with at least a third pony poo which saves on potting mix.
I was given some sheep wool and decided to try it in the worm farm. I suspect it helped the worms stay warm in winter and may help regulate their temperature in summer. Their next favourite is avocado.
