Hints & tips

MAKE LIQUID FERT

Animal manure from the farm is used to feed the plants, Robin says. “I half-fill a 20-litre bucket with water, and add the manure to fill the bucket to the top. I let it soak down for a few days into a thick liquid. I apply this to my roses and vege garden, and see the effects much sooner than if I let it sit on top of the soil. There’s also less smell.”

FIGHT TOMATO BLIGHT

Mix 1 cup of milk powder with 4 cups of water. Spray this on to the leaves. “I tried it for the first time this past summer. It worked a treat.”

GET THE RIGHT SHAPE

“I trim my loropetalums into standards, so I can still enjoy that bronze-coloured foliage amongst my perennials. This way you can grow small things beneath too.”
