THE TART TIN, Matt Cross’ bakehouse business, has a cult following at Otago Farmers’ Market, where the surf-mad Dunedinite and his trusty caravan Minty pop up every Saturday. The Tart Tin also supplies cafes around the city during the week, and this book covers all the sweet treats Cross is loved for, from biscuits and slices to macarons, doughnuts, cakes, tarts and pies. There’s a nice mix of the old-school (Gran’s rum balls, Mum’s sticky lemon loaf ) and the more modern (jelly tip doughnuts, scorched apricot and yoghurt cheesecake), and each recipe is prefaced with the inspiration behind it.
